Iran’s Chief of General Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri said his three-day visit to Turkey, which was described as “unprecented,” was necessary for better consultation and collaboration on various regional and military issues.

Bagheri spoke to Iranian press regarding his visit to Turkey. Stating that the two countries agree that an independence referendum to be held in Iraqi Kurdish regional government will destabilize the region, Bagheri said Iran and Turkey also agree on the cooperation in the peace process in Syria in the Astana talks. Bagheri also noted that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will visit Iran soon.

Bagheri pointed out that the meetings in Turkey were efficient, and added: “It was a necessary visit for better consultation and collaboration on various regional and military issues. We have had amicable relations and secure borders with Turkey for many years. However, this visit was necessary to change our perspective.”

Presidential spokesman İbrahim Kalın had stated that Iran was an important country with which Turkey was in constant consultation with “not only on the issue of Syria or Iraq, but also on all other regional issues.”

Turkey will additionally host Russia’s Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov to discuss the situation in Idlib.
