The first salat al eid was performed in the Sultan's Pavillion part of the Hagia Sophia Museum after 83 years, Director of Hagia Sophia Museum Hayrullah Cengiz stated.

Cengiz said that the prayer there followed the calls on social media to get together in the Sultan's Pavillion part of the complex.

"There have been prayers perfomred since 1991, however the last salat al eidain was performed in 1933," he said. Around 100 believers attended the salat al eidain of Monday, he added.

On Monday, millions of Muslims marked the beginning of the four-day Feast of the Sacrifice, which for many starts with a congregational prayer in a mosque.

Millions of Muslims across the world are celebrating the Eid al-Adha, one of the two most important festivals in the Muslim calendar.

The holiday, also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, is based on praying and animal sacrifice, as it symbolizes Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son as a sign of devotion to Allah.
