The first contingent of Kurdish Peshmerga forces, who were dispatched to the embattled Syrian town of Kobani to battle against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, have returned to Iraq, official sources said.

According to sources, the Peshmerga troops were airlifted to the Erbil International Airport by a private plane that took off from the airport in Turkey's southeastern Sanliurfa province Thursday.

The first batch, headed for the Syrian border town in October, was replaced by fresh Peshmerga troops Tuesday.

Peshmerga fighters are battling alongside Syria's main Kurdish groups against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or the ISIL terrorists.Peshmerga are acting together with the fighters, linked with the Democratic Union Party, or PYD, the most dominant Kurdish organisation in north of Syria.

The Iraqi army and Peshmerga have been battling the ISIL in Iraq since mid-June, when the terrorists took control of Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq. The militant group is now said to be in control of large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.
