The United Nations refugee agency has reported that some 146 migrants are feared missing after their boat capsized Wednesday in the Mediterranean, shortly after casting off from the Libyan coast, according to the one man who has so far been rescued by a search operation.

The Gambian man, who was rescued by a Spanish military ship participating in the EU's "Operation Sophia", was brought to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Search operations for additional survivors are still ongoing.

"Operation Sophia" is part of an EU effort to crack down on human smugglers on the Mediterranean Sea.
