A Belgian court ruled on Tuesday that fugitive terrorist Fehriye Erdal would be tried in Belgium for crimes she is accused of committing in Turkey.

Erdal will be tried in absentia as she managed to escape arrest in Brussels 10 years ago, despite surveillance from 32 agents of the Belgian state security.

She is one of the three members of the outlawed the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) allegedly involved in the assassination of influential businessman Özdemir Sabancı and two of his employees on January 9, 1995 in Istanbul.

The group is blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the European Union.

Erdal was arrested in Belgium in 1999 and put under house arrest under 24-hour surveillance by security staff.

Turkey had been seeking the extradition of Erdal to stand trial in Turkey but the Belgian authority refused Ankara's request. Then the terrorist went missing.

According to court ruling Erdal would be tried in absentia and police will search for her as Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for her.
