A Dutch ship has been fined 60,000 Turkish liras (around $16,749) for pollution in Turkey's southwestern Gulf of Fethiye.

Turkish coast guard officials told Anadolu Agency, on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, that teams determined that pollution spotted in the Knight Island area in Mugla province originated from the "Deo Volento" vessel.

In addition to the coast guard issuing the fine, a court file was submitted to the Chief Public Prosecutor of Fethiye on the ship's captain on charges of "deliberately polluting the environment".

After paying the fine, the ship set sail from the area.
