The initial probe into a damage to the rear window of the car of Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chairman in southeast Turkey has ruled out gunfire as a likely cause, the regional governor's office announced Monday.
HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas was in Diyarbakir province Sunday night when police discovered the damage to the rear window of his armored car belonging to the Diyarbakir Municipality.
In its written statement, the Diyarbakir Governor's Office said that when the police escort discovered the damage, the vehicle had been parked and there was nobody inside it.
The governor's office clarified that no attack had taken place.
"No attack was carried out against him or his car," the statement said. According to initial findings, a three-by-three centimeters of damage was observed on the rear window of the car. However, the criminal investigation saw no evidence of gunfire and suspected the damage was caused by a hard object.
The statement added that police escort with the provincial security directorate had followed Demirtas throughout his program in the province.
