At least two police officers were killed in a terrorist assault on district police headquarters in Turkey's southern Adana province on early Friday.

According to local security forces, a group of terrorists from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, attacked Pozanti District Police Department with weapons, killing officers Isa Ipek and Serdar Kazar.

As the police responded the attack, two terrorists were also killed in the clash.

Adana Governor Mustafa Büyük said that security forces launched a wide-scale operation in the region to catch those helping the assailant terrorists.

Meanwhile, Pozanti District Governor Bilal Özkan and Adana Provincial Police Chief Cengiz Zeybek also inspected the crime scene.

Bomb squads defused the grenades on the terrorists killed in the police office.

Security forces have taken strict security measures around the attacked police department.

Turkey's military and police have been hit by a number of attacks over the past week following the Islamic States of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL-linked suicide bombing in southern border Şanlıurfa province that killed 32 people on July 20.

Since then, Turkish security forces have arrested hundreds of people with suspected links to ISIL, the PKK, and leftist groups, detaining over 1,300 people across the country, according to a statement on Wednesday from the Prime Minister's Office.

Turkey has also launched airstrikes against ISIL and PKK positions in Syria and Iraq.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU and Turkey.
