PYD's declaration of a federation in northern Syria could become a cause for Turkish military intervention in the area.

On Wednesday, the PYD/YPG terror group controlling areas of northern Syria said they would declare a federal system soon. The step will combine three PYD/YPG-led autonomous areas of northern Syria into a federal system.

If the Federal System of Northern Syria goes ahead, it is likely to set off alarm bells in Ankara.

Turkey, which has repeatedly voiced its concern over the PYD's affiliation with the PKK terrorist group and the sharing of logistical information and weaponry between them, said Ankara would not accept this move.

Any unilateral action aimed at declaring a federation cannot be valid, the Turkish foreign ministry said, adding that it supports Syria's national unity and territorial integrity.

By declaring autonomous areas in northern Syria, PYD aims to unite three Kurdish cantons and then march ahead towards the Azaz-Jarabulus corridor, which Turkey declared its red line.

The planned map of PYD's northern Syrian federation is said to add some Turkish cities and provinces to the southeastern part of the country.

According to PYD's federation plan in northern Syria, the terror group aims to include southeastern Turkish districts and provinces such as Nusaybin, Ceylanpınar, Suruç and Akçakale into their map. The plan also includes some other border cities where Turkish security forces have been conducting counter-terror operations against PKK terrorists.

From this point of view, declaration of a Kurdish federal area across Turkey's border may lead Ankara to launch a military operation in the area, as the Syrian government, Russia and the United States also stand against PYD's move.

“Drawing any lines between Syrians would be a great mistake," said Bashar January, head of the Syrian delegation at the Geneva talk.

The Turkish military has attacked PYD terrorists across the border in Syria several times and killed hundreds of them.

Moreover, Mount Qandil in northern Iraq, headquarters of the PKK terror group, has been repeatedly bombed by Turkish fighter jets for several years.

Beside all these developments, the new move by the PYD/YPG forces to declare an autonomous region would lead Turkey to intervene in the area directly.

Turkey could extend its ongoing military operation in its southeastern region into any newly declared PYD/YPG federal area, sources close to security authority said.
