An indictment alleging a widespread blackmail plot organized by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) was approved by a court in western Turkey on Monday.
The document prepared by the Usak Chief Prosecutor's Office claims the group, which is said to be behind the July 15 failed coup, collected video and audio recordings of high-profile figures in order to “threaten and blackmail" them.
Prosecutors in Usak province have launched a nationwide probe into the financing of FETÖ which, according to the indictment seen by Anadolu Agency, infiltrated police intelligence units to gather information on senior politicians, bureaucrats, media figures and military officers as well as gain forewarning of investigations into FETÖ members.
“Thus, FETÖ gained not only defensive opportunities but also attacking opportunities," the indictment said. “[FETÖ] used all the facilities of intelligence units and obtained confidential information.
“FETÖ has a wide archive including visual and audio records, photographs, documents and even personal anecdotes to be used for blackmailing their enemies and targets, including politicians, journalists, gangsters, bureaucrats, academicians and soldiers."
