The U.S. was behind the deadly March 16 airstrikes that killed 38 civilians in an Aleppo countryside mosque, according to a report by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria.

“The Commission therefore concludes that United States forces failed to take all feasible precautions to avoid or minimize incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians and damage to civilian objects, in violation of international humanitarian law,” the report says.

U.S. jets targeted the mosque during Friday prayers

On March 16, 2017, fighter jets targeted the Omar Ibn al-Khattab mosque in the Aleppo countryside village of al-Jinah. The attack was first said to have been committed by Russian and Assad forces. However, the U.S Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesmen said it had “targeted al-Qaida terrorists“ in the attack, which killed close to 60 worshippers in a mosque where 300 had gathered to attend Friday prayers.

The UN probe also concluded that Syrian President Bashar Assad's air force conducted a sarin-gas attack against the Idlib town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed at least 83 civilians in April.
