Neymar suffered fractured vertebrae in the 88th minute of the game and has been declared out for the remainder of the World Cup.

Brazil's Sport TV reported that surgery would not be needed, but that Neymar would have to have the injured are immobilized.

Brazil's Medical staff announced on Saturday that 22-year-old Neymar's third vertebra had been broken during the match which ended as a 2-1 Brazilian victory the day before, so he will miss the rest of the World Cup 2014.

'Neymar had a scan, which confirmed he had fractured in third vertebra,' said Rodrigo Lasmar, the Brazilian Football Association doctor.

"In terms of the recovery process, it's a fracture that heals quickly, but unfortunately he'll be in no condition to play next week."

"It's not serious in the sense that it requires surgery, but he's in pain and he'll need to immobilize it to recover. He'll have to have it immobilized with a belt for a few weeks to be able to get back to full mobility," Lasmar explained.

Very sad news

Neymar's absence was greeted with dismay and sadness by his teammates in Brazil.

A Selecao forward Hulk said: "It's very sad news. We are delighted with the win, but sad about this news. It's all very frustrating."

"Neymar really looks after himself. He was so excited about the World Cup and he'd helped us so much. We have to get over this and run even harder for him. We're going to try and be the champions anyway and dedicate the title to him."

Get well soon my friend

Meanwhile, many world renowned footballers such as Colombian star Radamel Falcao, Italian forward Mario Balotelli, Germany's Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski and his teammate from Spanish club Barcelona, Argentine powerhouse Lionel Messi, each wished Neymar a quick recovery via social media.

Messi wrote his facebook page, 'Get well soon my friend.'

Brazil's ace Neymar has scored four goals for his country during the tournament so far but he is now obliged to watch his teammates from the sidelines.

The South American team will be playing against Germany in the semifinal showdown at Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte, on 8 July.
