Renovation of one minaret of the Blue Mosque has started, to correct structural instability. The minaret, one of the six for which the mosque is famous, is being restored after its 532 stones were refinished. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, or Sultan Ahmet Mosque, is a historic mosque in Istanbul also known as the “Blue Mosque,” for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Its social complex contains the founder's tomb, a madrasah and a hospice.
