Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte stated that Turkey has played a key role in the solution process of the migrant crisis and added that the European countries haven't contributed significantly so far.

Rutte who described criticism of Turkey as 'insolence,' also recalled that Turkey has embraced more than 2,200,000 people fleeing violence.

"Due to the clashes in Aleppo, the number of the people seeking asylum in Turkey may increase," Rutte said after his weekly cabinet meeting.

"I believe that only through a combined effort between Turkey and Europe will we be able to ensure the refugee situation in Turkey will improve," Rutte added.

Turkey will take on more refugees, but "it's important to realize that we need to help (Turkey)," said Rutte.

Apart from financial aid, "we also have to be willing to bring people from Turkey to Europe," where they will be sheltered and distributed fairly among countries, Rutte said.

Dutch Prime Minister also expressed the current situation in Syria by using a 'hell' metaphor.

Statement amid meetings with Davutoğlu

Rutte's statement came before a planned meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to firm up plans to tackle Europe's worst migration crisis since World War II.

Also, previously on Thursday, Rutte met with Davutoğlu along with his German and Greek counterparts Angela Merkel and Alexis Tsipras as EU Term President.

The Netherlands in November said it would double the number of beds and shelters for tens of thousands of asylum-seekers.

Last year the country of 17 million people took in a record number of around 60,000 asylum-seekers, most of them from war-torn Syria
