Iraqi forces clashed on Friday with the Peshmerga at Altun Kupri, 35 kilometers (22 miles) northwest of Kikurk, on the road between the city and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) capital Erbil.

A security source who spoke to the official website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (KYB) said that there were clashes between the Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces at Altun Kupri on the Kirkuk-Erbil highway.

The clash allegedly occurred when the Peshmerga reacted to Iraqi forces who wanted to inspect the Altun Kupri village.

No information was given about whether there were any fatalities or injuries arising from the incident.

The district of Altun Kupri lies on the road between the city of Kirkuk - which fell to Iraqi forces on Monday - and Erbil, capital of the KRG in northern Iraq that voted in an illegal referendum last month to secede from Iraq against Baghdad's wishes.

The Iraqi forces have advanced into Kirkuk province largely unopposed as most Peshmerga forces withdrew without a fight.

The fighting at Altun Kupri marked only the second instance of significant resistance in Kirkuk province since Monday.

Altun Kupri marks the admnistrative limit between Kirkuk and Erbil. It belongs administratively to the Kirkuk province.
