Counter-terrorism police in Kenya arrested two medical interns early Monday suspected of involvement in plotting a biological attack, police said.

The pair, identified by local media as Mohamed Shukri and Abdulrazak Abdinuur, are thought to be linked to Daesh and had reportedly been planning to flee to Somalia to join the terror group when they were arrested in the coastal town of Malindi.

A senior anti-terrorist police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, said: “They were attached to Mombasa sub-county hospital. Our reports show that they are linked to the university students arrested in Kenya for planning a bio-terror attack."

The officer said communications between the suspects and Daesh had been intercepted.

In May, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett said medical students were being targeted by Daesh.

Shukri and Abdinuur have been linked to Mohammed Abdi Ali, a medical intern arrested early May and accused of planning a biological attack using anthrax.
