Russia has announced that it has cancelled the meeting of the Russia-Turkey High Level Cooperation Council which was expected to take place in Moscow on December 15 with the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Kremlin Spokesman Dmitriy Peskov made this announcement during a press conference on Monday.

The meeting was planned over the one-hour meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during the G20 summit in the southern Turkish province of Antalya in November.

Relations between Turkey and Russia have been severely strained over the downing of an SU-24 Russian bomber in Turkish airspace last month.

Turkey attempts to calm crisis

The Russian warship Caesar Kunikov, which previously staged a provocative activity while passing Istanbul's Bosporus Strait en route to the Mediterranean Sea on December 6, passed through the Bosporus again on Monday.

The incident was followed by a statement from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, saying Turkey does not want continued tension with Russia.

It was not the first time that Ankara has attempted to calm the crisis with Russia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attempted to ease the current diplomatic strain in a statement, saying Turkey had no intention of escalating the incident.
