The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced Monday that it suspended the membership of 261 lawmakers, including members of the Senate, the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.

Seven senators, 71 members of the National Assembly, 84 Punjab Assembly members, 50 Sindh Assembly members, 38 Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa members and 11 Balochistan members have been suspended as they failed to submit details of their assets, the ECP stated.

The statement said the lawmakers will not be able to perform their legislative duty until they reveal the details of their assets and liabilities.

Among the suspended members are Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law Muhammad Safdar, Interior Minister Muhammad Tallal Badar Chaudhary and Religious Affairs Minister Sardar Yousuf.

All parliamentarians are required to submit details of their assets and liabilities, including those of their families, to the ECP by Sept. 30, under the law enacted in 2002 during the term of former President Pervez Musharraf.

The ECP suspended 336 lawmakers last year after they failed to submit their financial statements.
