Turkish Air Force fighter jets carried out airstrikes last night, pounding 12 targets that belonged to Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist organization. The aerial assault took place in the northern Iraq regions of Qandil, Zap and Matina, according to a statement released by the Turkish Armed Forces.

The airstrikes were launched last night between the hours of 20:00 and 20:23 local Turkey time, destroying 12 shelters that housed PKK terrorists.

The fighter jets returned safely to their bases upon successfully completing their mission.

The Turkish Army had previously carried out several airstrikes in northern Iraq in January, neutralizing 57 PKK terrorists, according to a statement released at the time by the Turkish General Staff.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, has been conducting violent armed attacks in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984.

More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the more than three-decades long conflict.
