In a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi declared Beijing’s support for the Palestinian cause and hailed Ankara’s efforts to protect Palestine.

“We stand by the Palestinians. We stand by all nations which support the Palestinian cause, including Turkey. China is on the side of justice,” Yi said.

Çavuşoğlu is in China for a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart. A number of mutual agreements have been reached during the visit.

Wang said that China was ready to strengthen communication and consultation between Ankara and Beijing regarding the Middle East.

Turkey’s election

Yi also commented on Turkey’s upcoming June 24 election. “We will respect the choice of the Turkish people,” Yi said.

Six candidates are running for president, while eight political parties are taking part in the parliamentary elections.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has served as president since 2014 -- Turkey's first popularly-elected president. Before that, he served as prime minister from 2003 to 2014.

Erdoğan would be Turkey's first leader to rule under the presidential system should he win the June election.
