Germany's Bundestag lower house of parliament voted overwhelmingly on Thursday in favour of a symbolic resolution that declares the 1915 incidents a "genocide".

The resolution is likely to anger Turkey, a crucial partner for Germany and its European partners in slowing the flow of migrants to western Europe under a new EU-Turkey pact championed by Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş said that the German resolution is a 'historic mistake'.

"The resolution does not behoove the friendship of Turkey and Germany. This is not an issue of politicians, but historians and scientists," Kurtulmuş said.

The Deputy PM also said that Turkey will respond to the resolution through every platform.

The spokesman of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Yasin Aktay said that the vote seriously damaged relations between Berlin and Ankara,

AK Party planned to present to the Turkish parliament a declaration against the vote, a party source said.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said earlier on Thursday that it would be "irrational" for the German parliament to approve a symbolic resolution that declares the 1915 incidents a "genocide."

"This vote in Berlin will be a test of the friendship between the two allies," said the Turkish PM.
