Engin Tilbaç was martyred at the age of 16, when he was run over by a tank, protesting the coup attempt on July 15th. At first, he could not be identified because of the deformation of his face. After three days of his family searching for him he was finally identified by means of a DNA test. His mother was mentally disabled while his father was physically disabled.

Engin responded to the call from President Erdogan on July 15th and took to the streets. He was protesting the coup attempt of the Gülenist Terrorist Organization as he went to the front of Baştabya Barracks and set up against the coup. His family was on vacation in their hometown, Malatya. His mother and father were informed by Forensic Medicine regarding the sad news of their son who had been missing for three days. Martyr Engin Tilbaç’s funeral service was in his hometown of Malatya and he was buried in Pütürge on July 21st. His name was given to a preschool in Adıyaman.

The public did not allow passage to coup soldiers who arrived from the 66th Armored Mechanized Infantry Brigade Command and attacked Istanbul Police Headquarters on Vatan Avenue with two tanks and five armored personnel carriers (APC). Police opened fire and prevented a helicopter arriving to provide backup to the coup soldiers from landing.

In the 15 July resistance, a total of 248 people, from 59 provinces, fell as martyrs. The five cities that had the most martyrs were Ankara, Istanbul, Yozgat, Çorum and Rize .
