Özcan Özsöy

Özcan Özsoy was shot by putschist soldiers at the Beştepe Gendarmerie Headquarters, where he went to resist the putschists on the night of the July 15th coup attempt. He was martyred in the hospital where he had previously received treatment on November 12th. He left behind a 3 year old son.

Tekin Özsoy, Özcan’s brother, described the night of July 15th when they went to Beştepe upon the call of President Erdoğan, in his statement he gave to Yeni Şafak, “We went to the Gendermarie General Headquarters around 01:00 AM on the night of July 15th. I was injured around 02:30 AM. We had been together until that moment. We lost each other in the crowd as things escalated. I decided to search the hospitals until the morning. I found him in the Veteran Hospital in the morning. He was shot in the head. His treatment was still ongoing. He reached martyrdom around 01:30 last night.” Özsoy said his brother was not able to talk during his treatment, “His throat had a hole to allow him to breathe more comfortably. He couldn’t talk. His conscious was open in the last days. He was able to make small moves. Infection started one day ago. He died a martyr’s death yesterday.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Özcan Özsoy in the hospital that he received treatment in. Özsoy was buried in his hometown of Haymana, Ankara.

One of the first targets attacked by the putschist soldiers in Ankara was the General Staff Headquarters. Armed with tanks, putschists started shooting at civilians who rushed to the General Staff Headquarters. With orders “to retalliate,” police crews launched an operation against the putschists, during which helicopters that arrived at the scene provided support. Many civilians were martyred in front of the General Staff Headquarters, and clashes lasted until the morning hours.
