Şirin Diril, who worked as a driver, used his service car as a cover for Special Operations Police Officers on the night of July 15th. Traitorous putschists started shooting at Diril, who was sitting vulnerably in the car, from the front window. He was martyred inside the car.
Diril had been working at Istanbul Turk Telekom for 6 years. He told his colleagues that he was going to Kısıklı as soon as he heard about the coup attempt. Diril did not listen to his friend’s warnings and went outside after President Erdoğan’s call.
He guarded 8 Special Operations policemen
After some time, he was asked to take Special Operations Policemen to the Turk Telekom building in Kadıköy. Diril faced putschists when he arrived at the destination requested by the policemen. Putschists soldiers started shooting from the Turk Telekom building. Diril noticed that there was nothing to cover the 8 policemen so he pulled his vehicle in front of the tank. When his vehicle stopped, he locked himself in the vehicle. Putschist soldiers started shooting at the vehicle from the front window. One bullet hit Diril in his hip. He lost his life inside the car as he was not able to get out.
“I’m a Kurdish mother, thank God”
His family learned of his martyrdom at 8:00 AM on July 16th. The 33 year old martyr Diril was buried in his hometown of Gaziantep, after his funeral.
Münevver Diril, mother of the martyr, said, “I’m a Kurdish mother, thank God my son was not killed for a bad cause. My son died for his country and flag. Thank God for that. Nobody wants to lose a child. But my son died a martyr’s death. I’m proud. I’m not happy about my son’s death but I’m happy about the reason he died.”
The name of martyr Şirin Diril was given to an Imam Hatip middle school in Islahiye, Gaziantep and an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul.
