Yalçın Aran tried to stop the tanks controlled by putschists with an excavator that belonged to the municipality. Aran was martyred as a result of putschist soldiers shooting at the excavator with long-barreled weapons.
Yalçın Aran, who worked as an excavator operator in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municiaplity, heard of the coup attempt from the TV. Aran was urgently called to work on July 15th. He went to his work with the support of his wife Asalet Aran. His wife Asalet called him at 02:00 AM. He told his wife that he was at the toll booths at Orhanlı and that he would stay on duty until the morning. The situation in the toll booths changed suddenly at 04:00.
Tanks started moving towards excavators
One of the operators said to the workers waiting in the excavators at Orhanlı in Kurtköy, “Everybody go to your vehicles. Lift all your excavators to the same level!” The silence was disrupted as all excavators were lifted. Tanks started moving towards excavators and started shooting at the people there.
Operator Yalçın Aran was martyred by a tank shooting at the excavator he was using. His wife received the news at 07:00 in the morning.
The 36 year old martyr was buried in his hometown of Niğde on July 17th. Aran was married, with 5 children.
The name of martyr Yalçın Aran was given to a middle school in Pendik, Istanbul.
