Martyred during an air strike carried out by putschist soldiers on the night of July 15th, Beytullah Yeşilay had been married for two years and had a 4-month-old daughter named Miray.

Finding out about the coup attempt on the news, he went out with his bosses and brothers immediately. Fighting all night long to neutralize the tanks in front of the General Staff Building, he was covered in heavy fire and became a martyr.

“If we don’t have a country, we won’t exist”

His wife Asya, was in Erzurum with their daughter at the time. Stating that her husband called and asked for her blessings, she wanted him to return home and said, “What are we going to do if anything happens to you?” Beytullah responded, “If we don’t have a country, then we won’t exist.” This was their last conversation. The next time Asya called, police answered the call and reported that her husband was heavily wounded. Immediately setting off, Asya found out that she became a martyr’s wife towards the following morning.

Expressing that their son’s fight for his country made them proud, mother Türkhan Yeşilay, “One of my sons became a martyr, another a veteran, I am very happy. No one shall be scared of those rascals. We stand with our state for the country and nation. We are fine, thank God. I have three more sons and I am ready to sacrifice them for the country as well, I will be willing to go too, if necessary.

Beytullah was buried in Yozgat after the funeral prayer was held in the Saraykent Municipality Square.

The name Beytullah Yeşilay was given to a middle school in Yozgat.

FETÖ soldiers raided the General Staff Command on the night of the coup attempt and took Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar hostage. Tanks and helicopters then started firing into the crowd that had gathered around the quarters. Akar was rescued within the next few hours and brought to Çankaya Palace.
