“They drove the tanks over us”
Engin Kurnaz, Martyr Muhammet Ali Aksu’s cousin, who survived the coup attempt with an injury, added that they left home to resist the coup and that they, with the group they were with, formed a shield between the police and the soldiers to prevent any conflict. He stated as following: “We heard that our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was coming towards us with a big crowd. We took the way to the airport on foot. We were going to be shield for our president. When we started walking, we noticed that tanks were coming right behind us. Crushing the vehicles at first, it came towards us. My uncle’s son, Muhammet Ali Aksu, stood before the tank. But they continued crushing non-stop. I was trapped between the tank and the concrete wall. When I turned my back and looked, I saw our people being martyred with gunfire from the tank. I left my family asking their blessings. My uncle’s son was martyred after being run over by tanks. I would react the same way, if a similar attempt occurs tomorrow.”
Muhammet Ali Aksu was committed to the ground in his hometown village of Doyran, in Alaçam, Samsun. The martyr’s name was given to the primary and middle schools of his village.
