Şükrü Bayrakçı noticed that tanks were going the wrong way as he was going home from work on the night of July 15th. He tried to use his car to stop the tanks. Bayrakçı was not able to stop the tanks and was crushed and martyred by the tank running over his vehicle.

Official driver Şükrü Bayrakçı was going home, to the European side, when he noticed a tank carrying putschists going the wrong way. He pulled his car in front of the tank to protect the citizens that the tank was going to come in contact with. The tank climbed the median strip and ran over Bayrakçı’s car twice. Şükrü Bayrakçı talked to his wife Nesrin Bayrakçı at 10:30 PM for the last time on the night of July 15th. He told his wife, “I may not come home. Soldiers are near me. Maybe I will fight in this too.”

The 31 year old Şükrü Bayrakçı’s legs were crushed and the back of his head burst after a tank controlled by putschist soldiers ran over his vehicle. Bayrakçı was martyred on the Ümraniye Çakmak Bridge.

His family found his body at the Beykoz State Hospital at 08:30 AM. Bayrakçı was buried in Kartal.

Şükrü Bayrakçı, who was from Afyon, was married, with a 6 year old daughter.

News of one of the bloodiest nights in Turkey, the July 15 coup attempt, first spread with the disturbance on the Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Bosporus Bridges. Citizens realizing that both bridges were occupied by traitor FETÖ soldiers resisted, saying: “We won’t surrender this land to you”, on the call of President Erdoğan to the public to claim the streets.

Some of the tanks used during the coup attempt were from the General Nurettin Baransel Barracks located in Kartal, Istanbul. People who received the news of the coup attempt stood on watch in front of the barracks until the morning to prevent the tanks from leaving, forming a wall of flesh. After the operation held toward the morning by the police force, six soldiers attempting the coup were taken into custody.
